Crisp Cucumber, Desi Curd & Chia Seed Hydration Gel
“A refreshing, electrolyte-replenishing cooling bowl combining finely grated local cucumber, live desi curd, and soaked chia seeds for muggy September afternoons.”
Ingredients
- 1 cup firm green cucumber (washed, partially peeled, and finely grated)
- 1/2 cup fresh homemade unsweetened curd (dahi, rich in active lactic cultures)
- 1 teaspoon black chia seeds (soaked in 3 tablespoons warm water for 20 minutes until gelatinous)
- 1 pinch ground roasted cumin seeds (bhuna jeera, a time-tested Ayurvedic carminative to ease gas)
Health Notes
Verification
“When September brings heavy humidity without rainfall, dogs lose electrolytes through continuous panting. Soaked chia seeds act as tiny hydration reservoirs in the canine colon, releasing water slowly throughout the day. Fresh desi curd cools core body heat and soothes any heat-induced digestive unrest.”
Perfect For
All life stages from 4 months upwards
Shiro's Method
In a small glass prep bowl, soak the chia seeds in 3 tablespoons of warm water for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until a thick, protective gel forms around each seed.
Grate the fresh cucumber on the medium side of a box grater. Squeeze the cucumber gently in your hands to release half of the liquid, reserving the juice.
In a mixing bowl, lightly whisk the fresh dahi until smooth and creamy.
Fold the grated cucumber and the fully expanded chia seed gel into the whisked curd.
Add a tiny pinch of roasted cumin powder and stir until evenly distributed.
Serve chilled (not freezing cold) in your dog's regular dish after their afternoon walk, or smear onto a textured lick mat to encourage slow, calming licking.
Storage
Best served fresh on the day of preparation. Can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours.
Serving Amount
1/4 to 1/2 cup as an afternoon hydration snack for dogs weighing 25 kg and above.
