Late-Monsoon Steamed Apple & Asian Pear Fiber Purée
“A gentle pectin-dense fruit purée made with sweet orchard fruits, steamed to soften cellulose and topped with crushed pumpkin seeds for bowel regularity.”
Ingredients
- 1 crisp sweet apple (Gala or Fuji, peeled, cored, and all seeds completely removed)
- 1 sweet Asian pear or Kashmiri babgosh pear (peeled, cored, seeds removed)
- 1/4 cup filtered water
- 1 teaspoon raw unsalted pumpkin seeds (pepitas, finely crushed in a mortar and pestle)
- 1/4 teaspoon pure Ceylon cinnamon powder
Health Notes
Verification
“Steaming raw fruit breaks down tough insoluble plant cell walls, ensuring your dog's shorter digestive tract extracts nutrients without triggering gas or fermentation. The high natural pectin content acts as an intestinal sponge, normalizing stool consistency during seasonal dietary shifts.”
Perfect For
All ages (wonderful gentle fruit introduction for puppies over 3 months)
Shiro's Method
Peel both the apple and the pear, cutting around the core to discard all seeds and the fibrous center. Apple and pear seeds contain cyanide precursors and must never be fed to dogs.
Chop the fruit flesh into small uniform cubes.
Place the fruit cubes and 1/4 cup of filtered water in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Cover and simmer gently for 8 to 10 minutes until the fruit is tender enough to crush effortlessly against the side of the pot with a wooden spoon.
Mash with a fork or pulse briefly in a food processor until you achieve a silky, applesauce-like texture.
Dust with Ceylon cinnamon and let the purée cool down completely.
Sprinkle the finely crushed raw pumpkin seeds on top immediately before serving.
Storage
Keep refrigerated in a sealed Mason jar for up to 5 days, or freeze in silicone molds for up to 2 months.
Serving Amount
1 to 2 tablespoons served as an occasional dessert topper 2 to 3 times per week.
