When Shiro Stopped Eating: The Infection Scare

It's terrifying when a Golden Retriever refuses food. This is how we identified the infection even after deworming.

There is nothing more unsettling in a Golden Retriever household than a silent kitchen at 7 PM. Usually, the sound of the kibble bag is like a starter pistol. But for Shiro, our fussy eater who gets bored of the same meal in 24 hours, identifying a 'real' medical problem is often a guessing game.

Since we are a vegetarian family, we mostly prepare veg meals for Shiro, adding chicken or fish only as needed. When he refused his 'Veg Delight' bowl two nights in a row, we initially thought he was just being his usual picky self, holding out for a treat. But this time, his energy was zero. A blood test revealed a bacterial infection. The recovery was a slow process of finding the one thing he wouldn't refuse - homemade, chilled curd rice with a tiny bit of shredded chicken. It taught us that with a fussy dog, you have to be extra vigilant: is it a 'hunger strike' or a health crisis?

The Shiro Solution

What actually worked

  • The 'Golden Cure': Plain chilled curd rice and boiled chicken to soothe the gut.
  • Small, frequent meals instead of two large ones to manage nausea during recovery.
  • Adding probiotics to help rebuild gut flora disrupted by the infection.
