Life with Shiro

Ball is Life: Shiro's Path to Obsession

From his first yellow ball to a full-blown addiction—how we balance fun with impulse control.

When he was 4 months old, Shiro thought a ball was just a weirdly shaped rock that didn't taste very good. Then, one afternoon in the park, a neon yellow sphere bounced off a tree root. Something clicked. The Retriever was born.

Now, life is lived in a state of constant 'is it a ball?'. We find them under the sofa, in my shoes, and occasionally buried in the laundry. We had to turn this obsession into a training tool. Now, the ball only comes out as a reward for impulse control. We've also moved away from tennis balls—the felt is too abrasive—and switched to solid rubber that survives the Golden 'chomp'.

The Shiro Solution

What actually worked

  • Transitioning to rubber Chuckit balls to protect his teeth and prevent shredding.
  • Two-ball training: Using a second ball to reward him for 'dropping' the first one.
  • Scheduled 'ball-free' walks to ensure he still focuses on sniffing and exploration.
