Shifting Shiro: Finding a Fav Spot in the New Flat

Moving home is stressful for dogs. Here's how Shiro claimed his 'power corner' in our new apartment.

Boxes. Tape. Chaos. For a dog who lives by his routine, moving home is a sensory overload. Shiro wandered through the empty rooms of the new flat, his nails clicking on the unfamiliar tile, looking slightly betrayed.

The trick to moving with a dog is 'The Safe Corner'. Before we even unpacked the kitchen, we set up his bed, his water bowl, and his favorite smelly toy in the quietest corner of the new living room. We didn't wash his bed before the move—having that 'old home' smell was crucial. By day four, he was snoring in his new spot like he'd lived there his whole life. Transitioning a dog is all about scent and schedule.

The Shiro Solution

What actually worked

  • Prioritizing his space: His bed was the FIRST thing we set up in the new flat.
  • Maintaining his walk schedule and feeding times down to the minute during the chaos.
  • Old, familiar-smelling blankets to ground him in the new space.
