The Guilt of Leaving Him Behind: Weekend Sitter Prep

When the whole family has to attend a function and Shiro can't come, the 'guilt' is real. Here's how we prep for a sitter.

The suitcase usually means 'vacation'. Shiro knows the sound of the zipper hitting the teeth. But when the car doesn't have his mat in the back, the 'dog guilt' hits like a ton of bricks.

Leaving Shiro behind for a family function is always a tug at the heartstrings. But deep down, a long car journey and a loud event just aren't fair to him. We've built a 'Shiro Sitter Pack' that includes everything from his exact feeding measurements to a guide on his favorite hiding spots. We also invite the sitter over for a playdate while we're there, so they aren't strangers when we eventually close the door.

The Shiro Solution

What actually worked

  • A detailed 'Shiro Bible' for the sitter with every quirk and habit documented.
  • Pre-portioned meal containers to avoid any confusion or overfeeding.
  • Leaving a piece of my worn t-shirt in his bed for a familiar scent while we're away.
