The Rainy Day Sniffari: Indoor Games for Wet Afternoons

How we tire out a high-energy Golden Retriever indoors when heavy monsoon rains cancel our evening walks in Gurugram.

When rain comes down in torrents outside our Gurugram apartment, physical walks are off the table. Shiro used to get restless, pacing between rooms and nudging his leash continuously.

We quickly discovered that fifteen minutes of intense nosework tires a dog out just as effectively as a 45-minute physical walk. We set up an 'Indoor Sniffari' in the living room: hiding kibble and tiny dehydrated treats under upside-down muffin tins covered with tennis balls, rolling treats inside rolled towels, and spreading peanut butter across a snuffle mat. Watching Shiro systematically use his nose to solve each puzzle is incredible. By the end of our 20-minute indoor session, he curls up on his rug completely content and ready for a deep nap.

The Shiro Solution

What actually worked

  • Creating a multi-station indoor scent game using household items like towels and muffin tins.
  • Using a felt snuffle mat to hide dry kibble and low-calorie training treats.
  • Pairing mental puzzles with a calming frozen lick mat session.
  • Keeping indoor game sessions under 20 minutes to prevent frustration.
