Surviving the 45°C Heatwave: Indoor Nosework Games

How we kept Shiro active and mentally stimulated during Gurugram's worst summer heatwave without stepping outdoors.

When the thermometer outside our apartment touched 45°C at 10 AM, we knew regular walks were out of the question. Shiro stood by the door, tail wagging, look of pure hope in his eyes, but stepping onto the asphalt would have burned his paws in seconds.

Living in a small apartment during an Indian heatwave means you have to find creative ways to burn a Golden Retriever's energy. Since we couldn't run outside, we brought the adventure indoors. We started hiding his favorite treats and toys around the living room and teaching him the 'find it' command. Ten minutes of intensive sniffing (nosework) tire him out as much as a thirty-minute walk, without any strain on his joints or hips.

The Shiro Solution

What actually worked

  • Using high-value, smelly treats like dried fish bits hidden under cardboard boxes to get his nose working.
