Summiting the Hills: Shiro's First Mountain Trip

Hiking at 7,000 feet with a 2-year-old dog. What we packed and how Shiro handled the thin mountain air.

The air in the mountains is crisp, thin, and smells of pine. For Shiro, who grew up smelling sea-salt and car exhaust, it was like his nose had finally been upgraded to 4K. He stood at the edge of the balcony in Manali, nostrils twitching, looking like he'd finally found home.

Traveling with a large dog in India is an exercise in logistics. 14 hours in a car, finding dog-friendly stays, and managing the altitude change. But seeing him confidently navigate a rocky trail, his tail a steady rhythm against the grass, made every hour of planning worth it. He handled the winding roads better than we did, mostly by sleeping with his head on a cool water bottle.

The Shiro Solution

What actually worked

  • Frequent break stops every 3 hours to prevent car sickness and allow for leg stretches.
  • Paw wax for protection against sharp rocks and a collapsible water bowl for frequent trail hydration.
  • A high-quality car safety harness to ensure he didn't slide during sharp mountain turns.
